Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl has come under fire from fans of Britney Spears after airing some less than popular opinions on US TV.

The rocker is filling in for Chelsea Handler on hit TV show Chelsea Lately this week in a series of Grammy related shows and joked that growing up in the public eye has taken its toll on Spears.

He quipped to the audience: "She just kinda seems dead inside, like there's nothing behind her eyes."

"Like there's nothing in her boobs anymore!"

Though the lines went down fairly well at the time, Britney’s army of dedicated fans soon took to fan sites and forums to make their distaste of the jokes known.

Spears hasn't had the easiest of times lately with her breaking up with her fiancé and leaving her role as judge on the US version of the X Factor within a matter of weeks of each other.

There was also talk that she was in talks about taking up a Las Vegas residency and though those claims have since been denied, there are still rumours that she is now in talks with another company.
