Tesco have announced that they will be launching a new digital music and ebook service under its Blinkbox brand later this year.

The new services will go alongside the already existing Blinkbox film store that they own a majority stock in and are already being billed as the new rival for services such as Amazon’s and Apple’s.

The new services which have been dubbed “Blinkboxbooks” and “Blinkboxmusic” will be run independently from Tesco’s website and will hold their own branding in a bid to boost their credibility in the entertainment market.

CEO of Tesco Digital Entertainment Michael Comish said: “Tesco is one of the UK’s leading retailers of movies and TV, music and books.

"How customers choose to enjoy those products is changing rapidly as technology changes the way we shop.

“The development of these new services demonstrates our total commitment to providing the very best entertainment as easily as possible for our customers. They allow us to provide even more choice in how customers buy and enjoy their entertainment.

“ I'm thrilled to announce the appointment of such high calibre digital leaders to these key roles and look forward to creating digital entertainment services that meet the changing needs of our customers.”
