Thatcher’s Death Sparks Rise in Downloads of Ding Dong the Witch is Dead
- in Latest
The death of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has sparked a surprise re-entry into the UK charts.
The song “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead” has climbed up the iTunes charts and landed at number 27 earlier today.
It only took 12 hours after her death to become public for “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead” to soar up the charts and it has become one of the biggest selling songs in the UK today.
The song has been covered by many artists but was first composed by Harold Arlen for the film “The Wizard of Oz” and recorded by Billie Burke and Judy Garland for the movie.
Arlen also re-recorded the song with Barbra Streisand back in 1966 but The Fifth Estate had the most successful cover version of the song in 1967.
This isn’t the first time that the song has been associated with Thatcher as British band Hefner used an extract from “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead” in their song “The Day That Thatcher Dies”.
It is the Judy Garland version of the song that is currently creeping up the charts.
