Heated Debates Emerge as BBC Radio 1 Won't Play Full 'Ding Dong' Song in Charts
- in Latest
Tomorrow will reveal the UK's number one and Ding Dong The Witch is Dead is a strong contender for the number 1 position. Yesterday a decision to cut short the song on the official charts was made but mixed responses have emerged, some angry about the decision.
In 2007 a Facebook group was set up by people who disagreed with the former PM to get the 1930's song to the top of the charts when Margaret Thatcher died. With the group gathering momentum, as the former prime minister passed away this week, the group emerged into light and the idea to make Ding Dong the Witch is Dead to top the charts spread publicly.
In a controversial decision controller of Radio 1 Ben Cooper said that he wouldn't play all the song but play a small clip, its since emerged that this will be a 4 or 5 second snippet of the 1 minute song.
Ben Cooper - "You have very difficult and emotional arguments on both sides of the fence.
As the news broke reports emerged that many people were glad that this decision was made in respect of Thatcher and her family, however not all agreed and some politicians even said the song should be played.
Other members of the public said that they should be able to hear the songs people are buying and that as a license payer they should have the right to listen to it. Heated debates have hit Twitter, some branding the whole decision a joke
In a tough decision Radio 1's controller probably made the best compromise. BBC Radio 1 currently holds the rights to play the official UK top 40 and has done for many years. Tomorrow (Sunday) will reveal the exact position of the Ding Dong song, which is currently at number 3.
