Emeli Sande has beaten The Beatles’ record of spending the most consecutive weeks in the top ten with a debut album.

The Beatles had previously held the record with their own debut “Please Please Me” for almost 50 years but Sande has now overtaken them with her album “Our Version of Events” which also became the biggest selling album of 2012.

The album was released in February last year and has not left the top 10 since, amassing an incredible 63 weeks and is now on course to completely smash The Beatles’ previous record of 62 weeks.

“Our Version of Events” has sold 1.82 million copies to date and spent ten weeks at number one.

As well as being the biggest seller of 2012, it is currently on course to be the biggest seller of this year as well having already shifted 429,000 copies since January.

Emeli said in an interview for the Official Charts Company: "I'm completely lost for words and this is something I could only have dreamed of. The Beatles are the greatest band of all time and their legacy lives on and continues to inspire all of us that make music.

"I'm so happy that so many people have connected with the stories and the songs on the record, this really is our version of events now.

"I'd like to say thank you to everyone that has bought, played or shared my music in the last year, without your support this would never have been possible."
