Gotye to Pay Out $1 Million in Royalties
- in Latest
Gotye has been forced to pay out a reported $1 million in royalties to deceased singer Luis Bonfá.
Gotye used a sample from Luis Bonfá’s 1967 song Seville on Somebody That I Used to Know after making a deal with the singer’s estate.
The track went on to be one of the best selling singles of 2012, not just in this country but all over the world and has currently sold 11.8 million copies worldwide to date. It was named the top selling track in both the US and the UK in 2012.
The deal that Gotye made with Bonfá’s estate means that he has to pay out 45% of the royalties from the track and it has been revealed that this mounts up to a staggering $1 million.
Bonfá was a South American musician that passed away back in 2001 and although the singer himself will obviously not benefit from the royalties, the money will all be going to his estate.
