A survey has revealed that merely 45% of people go to festivals for the music with drink, drugs and sex combined being surprisingly high on the list of priorities. The poll was carried out by MSN and showed that 25% of festival-goers admit to having sex in their tents and 21% admit to using drugs. 13% of the 2,000 people asked also said that they go out of their way to get into a fight at events. In statement commenting on the results of the poll, George McKay who is Professor of Cultural Studies at Salford University said: "Festivals are deeply rooted in the carnival tradition, which is to invert everyday expectations of normal behaviour. "Historically, carnivals would have a 'lord of misrule' who oversaw the revelries and subversion of the ordinary rules of life. Music festivals continue to be places where we can escape reality and subvert the rules - whatever age we happen to be." Some interesting statistics that the poll has revealed are shown below:
47% admit to doing something they would 'never consider' outside a festival
45% attend festivals for the music
25% have had sex with a stranger at a festival
21% have taken drugs at a festival
10% of people aged 45-54 admit to having sex with a stranger
9% of people aged 45-54 admit to taking drugs
