Jennifer Lopez has found herself in the middle of a PR scandal after performing a birthday gig for the president of Turkmenistan who is widely known for abusing human rights.

Lopez performed many of her greatest hits for President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow including a rendition of Happy Birthday Mr. President at the luxury resort which is said to be worth an estimated $2 billion.

It is believed that she is the first major star to ever perform in Turkmenistan, unsurprisingly so as the country’s people are heavily repressed by their Government.

Even something as simple as social media is banned in the country and the internet is heavily regulated.

Lopez and members of her entourage did seem as though they were unaware of the country’s situation with her choreographer tweeting: "I wonder where all my Turkmenistan followers are!? Hit me up!"

The tweet was later deleted but it showed a lack of knowledge about the situation.

Lopez’s publicist did release a statement which said that if she had been aware of the situation beforehand, she would not have performed in the country.
