Ex HMV Employee Sets up Store Called HVM
- in Latest
An ex-employee of HMV in Ireland has caused a stir and the threat of legal action from the music retailer after setting up his own similarly titled music store.
Tony Cregan had managed the Londonderry branch of HMV for 10 years before leaving the business when it went into administration and realised that there was a huge gap in the market after collecting 15,000 signatures to save his store.
He subsequently came up with a store to fill the void left by HMV and called it HVM.
He explained his reasons behind the decision by saying: "We thought what is the point calling the new show Local CDs, or whatever, we'll just call it HVM. HMV is gone."
Unfortunately for Cregan, he neglected the fact that HMV is still trading in the UK and the company sent him a letter saying that the "continued presence in the market of [his] business operating under the name HVM has caused and will continue to cause substantial damage to [HMV's] reputation and goodwill".
In response, Cregan changed his new store’s name to WAH saying: "We just turned the sign upside-down; now it's called WAH."
