Sir Elton John is set to receive the first ever Brits Icon Award which has been created by the BPI.

The award will be handed out as part of Brit Awards ceremonies in the future in order to honour artists who have made a significant contribution to the British music industry with either their writing, recording or performing.

Speaking of the award Sir Elton said: "It's a tremendous honour and a real thrill for me to have my work acknowledged in this way, and I'm really looking forward to participating in what promises to be a very special occasion."

Sir Elton will receive his award at the ceremony on 2nd of September and later broadcasted on ITV.

CEO of the Brit Awards Geoff Taylor said: "The Brit Awards has recognised many exceptional artists whose music has connected with millions of fans.

"A few of these artists, such as Sir Elton John, have achieved such a level of artistic creativity and originality, critical acclaim, global recognition and popular success that they deserve to be recognised as true Icons of our cultural life."

This year’s awards will feature performances from Sir Elton as well as many other current artists.
