Google Asked to Remove Piracy Links
- in Latest
Google has been prompted to remove over 100 million links to material that is in breach of copyright laws.
Many of the requests have been made under laws including the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and are aimed at making pirated content harder to get hold of by the average user.
The search engine giant has received double the requests to take down links to certain content as it received last year and in the last month alone they have been asked to remove 14 million links from the search results that users will see.
BBC news has reported that 32,000 copyright owners have made the requests including the BPI (British Recorded Music Industry) and they are mostly based on concerns over file-sharing sites.
A spokesperson representing the BPI released a statement saying that they "remove around one million links every week to music hosted on the internet without the artist's knowledge or permission".
High profile torrent sites that have already been blocked by ISPs in the UK include The Pirate Bay and EZTV.
