Ministry of Sound Sues Spotify Over User-Created Playlists
- in Latest
Ministry of Sound has reportedly sued Spotify for copyright infringement.
It has been alleged that user-created playlists that appear on the music streaming service mirror those that appear on official Ministry of Sound compilations.
According to the Ministry of Sound, Spotify has refused to remove such playlists from their service, even when the Ministry’s name is used directly.
Chief executive of Ministry of Sound Lohan Presencer has released a statement saying: "After several rounds of legal letters, this dispute will now be settled in court. We believe we have a clear-cut case.
"After 20 years and more than 50 million album sales, the value and creativity in our compilations are self-evident. We aim to ensure that our creativity is protected and respected.
"What we do is a lot more than putting playlists together: a lot of research goes into creating our compilation albums, and the intellectual property involved in that. It's not appropriate for someone to just cut and paste them.”
The Ministry wants Spotify to remove all offending playlists as well as blocking future ones from being created. They also want Spotify to pay them for damages.
