Miley Cyrus has hit back at the critics of her VMA performance with Robin Thicke, making the claim that MTV "cut almost everything” from the controversial duet.

She also attacked the state of modern pop music claiming that even though her performance was heavily edited, it was a “breath of fresh air”.

Miley told Fashion magazine: "I was trying to slap Robin's ass but no-one saw it! Believe me! MTV edited so much.

"They cut almost everything I did.

"I'm proud of that performance. I feel like music is really stale right now. I could have guessed what a lot of artists would have done that night.

"The reaction to what I did has been insane. I think it was a breath of fresh air! For the people that don't get it, you weren't meant to."

Despite the backlash that she received from the VMA performance, she claims that she “wasn’t trying to be sexy” through the whole routine.
