Katy Perry set tongues wagging after attending the MTV EMA awards with a ring on her wedding finger but pals have confirmed that rather than being an engagement ring, the offending piece of jewellery was merely chosen because it matched Perry’s outfit.

A source close to Perry confirmed: “She's not engaged. It was just a ring that went with the outfit.”

People representing Perry have neither confirmed nor denied the rumours, declining to comment on her personal life though a friend of the star previously said: "Everyone knows it's just a question of when John will propose. They realise they must be together."

Katy herself has not officially mentioned the media frenzy surrounding her fingers.
