Rapper Dizzee Rascal has received an honorary doctorate from the University of East London.

He received the accolade in recognition of his services to the local community and to the arts.

Dizzee was raised in Bow which is in close proximity to the University.

Dizzee has been in the news recently following the rapper’s rant over Twitter aimed at Radio 1 in relation to their playlist policy.

He tweeted: "Who ever does Radio 1 playlist suck my d**k! I'm tired of you C**ksuckers you better stop playing me. Make up your f**king minds!!!

"I'm tired of putting up with these 2 faced pricks at Radio 1! If anyone's got a problem let me know. All this nice guy s**t's dead!"

He added: "Going against radio 1 aunt [sic] smart but I'm tired holding it down and being a good little n***er. You're full of s**t Bar the specialists."

The BBC responded in surprise to the outburst.
