Aaron Carter has filed for bankruptcy, it has been announced.
The singer, younger brother of Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter, was at the peak of his musical career back in the late 90s and early 00s when he was a teenager and is best known for his hit song I Want Candy.
Carter has filed documents declaring liabilities of $2,204,854 (£1,367,860) and is currebtly living with a family member.
Carter’ representative Steve Honig was quick to stress that the vast majority of the singer’s debts were accumulated when he was a teenager and that the decision to file for bankruptcy was made to enable him to move forward in his personal and professional life.
Honig said: "The overwhelming majority of the debt he is asking to be discharged is from more than ten years ago when he was a minor and not in control of his finances."
Carter is currently working on material for a new album which will be his first since 2002.
