Simon Cowell has claimed that he is solely responsible for putting One Direction together in a recent interview.

It is a well known fact that the boyband were put together during the 2010 series of the X Factor after all five of the members failed to progress any further as solo artists.

All of the boys had originally entered the competition as solo artists hoping for a place in the under 25s category.

During their time on the show, Cowell was the boy's mentor and he recently spoke about his mentoring role on One Direction's webcast.

"It was my idea [to put you guys together]," Cowell said.

"It was really weird… I just said, 'Why don't we put these guys into a group?' It took 10 minutes!"

He also revealed that he had envisioned a much different fate for the boys saying: "I was disappointed because I thought all of you were going to go through as solo artists.”
