George Ergatoudis, head of music at BBC Radio 1 has confirmed plans for music stream to be included in the UK Official chart.

The announcement was made at last night’s Radio Academy Playlists: What Makes a Hit in 2014? event which took place in London.

The news was first announced by Earshot Creative who tweeted: "So @GeorgErgatoudis has just announced that @BBCR1 will v.soon be including @Spotify streams in the Top 40 charts not just sales!"

Ergatoudis later confirmed on Twitter: "To be clear @PeteyJamesDP @littleboots @earshotcreative @BBCR1 @Spotify Not just Spotify, other music streaming services will be included."

The changes will mean that every time a song is played on services such as Spotify and Blinkbox, it will be counted towards their final chart position.

The Official Chart Company already has a streaming chart but has previously, and continues to deny claims that streaming figures will be incorporated into the official chart.
