A statue of Kurt Cobain which depicts the former Nirvana front man weeping has been unveiled in his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington.

The tribute to the late star was unveiled on what would have been his 47th birthday and will now also be celebrated as Kurt Cobain Day in the city, its mayor has announced.

Mayor Bill Simpson stated: "Aberdeen residents may justifiably take pride in the role our community played in the life of Kurt Cobain and the international recognition our community has gained from its connections with Kurt Cobain and his artistic achievements."

The statue depicts Cobain shedding a single tear and is on display in the Aberdeen Museum of History.

The neighbouring town of Hoquiam has announced that they will be celebrating Kurt Cobain Day on April 10th which is the day that Nirvana are being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Hoquiam’s mayor Jack Durney said: "They bring great honor, I think as I say, to our entire community. And I think that it's good Kurt Cobain lived in Hoquiam for a little while, but he and Krist Novoselic are part of our community, and I think it's good to honour our sons and their great accomplishments."
