Lady Gaga has criticized the media for pitting female artists against one another.

The singer particularly took issue with the way in which the press compared her most recent album “ARTPOP” with Katy Perry’s latest offering “Prism”.

In her SXSW keynote speech, Gaga said: "I don't know what the f**k all I have to do with Katy Perry. My music is completely different.

"We've sold over 2.5 million copies of ARTPOP all over the world. I'm sorry I didn't sell a million records the first week, but I have before!

"I'm very proud of what we did and we sold as much as everybody else.

"[It seems like] when it comes to me, everybody forgets where the music business is now.

"I really don't fit in pop music in a way, but I came in through it.

"I like to think I've changed it in some way, so [people] don't think you have to fit into a mould."
