BLUE TOFU - THE DUO OF TIM STORY
AND ANDREA MATHEWS RETURNS
WITH THEIR SEDUCTIVE, ETHEREAL SOUND ON THE
POWERFULLY COMPELLING ALBUM ‘OUR ROOM’
“Letter From Lockdown,” The First Single From The Soulful
New Project, Reached #2 on the Billboard Hot Singles Chart
And Hit The Top 25 on the FMQB AC40 Radio Chart
The musical vibe of indie pop duo Blue Tofu (www.bluetofu.com) is as enigmatic as – but, as one critic wrote, far more appetizing than – the offbeat name that emerged from one of the trippy lyrics vocalist Andrea Mathews wrote on their 2001 self-titled debut album.
Tim Story, a Grammy-nominated producer and onetime instrumental artist on the legendary acoustic label, Windham Hill, calls their blend of his seductive, brooding grooves and deep, visceral textures and her haunting and ethereal vocals “mutant pop music…sort of trip-hop with a smoky, David Lynch kind of vibe.”
As Tim and Andrea were gearing up to release their powerfully compelling, quirky and slow-simmering new album Our Room, something amazing happened. In their July/August 2013 issue, The Absolute Sound –a popular magazine that reviews audiophile-oriented music and equipment– chose Blue Tofu’s debut as one of the Top 40 Best Sounding Recordings of all time.
This ranking puts Blue Tofu on a list with some of the most legendary multi-million selling albums of all time – including Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds, and classics by Sinatra, Joni Mitchell, even Stravinsky.
Our Room is a bold leap from its predecessor – more immediate, more infectious, more immersive. Despite a DNA that slides effortlessly through retro lounge, noir jazz and electronica, Our Room remains bracingly modern – not at all out of place with artists like Beach House, Amanda Palmer or Feist.
The duo just released a buoyant, compelling sci-fi video for the song “Hunger Tango,” on the album, which features Mathews in colorful makeup aboard a spaceship populated with various intergalactic workers. The video was directed by filmmaker Al Franklin.
Blue Tofu’s soulful new music is catching on in more ways than their earlier album. “Letter from Lockdown,” the moody and sensual, lyrically-biting first single from Our Room, reached #2 on the Billboard Hot Singles chart and made the Top 25 on the FMQB AC40 Radio Chart without any formal radio promotion.
