The rapper, singer and songwriter known as Meninx has released his latest single, “Breathe.” The track has been proudly published as an independent release entirely without financial support from the corporate music industry. Classy, shadowy, stunning and emotionally fecund, “Breathe” is a high-impact track which deserves the avid attention of music fans across the genres.

Meninx cites as main artistic influences masters of sound from virtually every corner of listening.

“I love all kinds music,” he writes. “If it connects, I will continue to listen. As far as influences go, growing up it was Tupac, Nirvana, Chino XL, Evanescence, Wu Tang, Tech n9ne, Eleni Karaindrou, Rakim, Eminem, Busta Rhymes, DMX, Linkin park, BBD, Bobby Brown, Boyz to Men, James Horner, Harry Gregson-Williams.”

Everything written and performed by Meninx is as passionately intense as it is intellectually stimulating. In fact, the very stage name, 'Meninx' is shared with the Greek word which means the membrane which covers the human brain and brain stem, itself. Inside the razor-sharp rhythm with which Meninx raps, a towering wit amuses and even educates. The performer slides vocabulary through his mic with deft aplomb, making words like 'phrenology' seem commonplace and cool as ice.

While this cerebral tack has been slightly explored in the rap genre by artists like the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy and KRS-One, it remains vastly atypical. It's less counter-intuitive considering Meninx's lyric history, however.

“I used to write poetry,” he explains. “Things progressed on from there.”

Meninx has described the message of his new single thus: “'Breathe' is about feeling trapped in a situation and wanting to scream to release the tension.”

The artist's official bio, which colors him in clever language not unlike that of his songs, reads in part:

“A departure from the bubblegum rhetoric of your archetypal modern 'MC,' when listening to Meninx, you're more likely to have parts of your brain you never knew you had stimulated, than to be made to feel like Scarface sitting in the bath surrounded by piles of cocaine and guns.”

This cultural difference cannot be overstated.

“Is this conscious rap, alternative or something else?” the bio continues. “Should he be onstage holding a mic with Jay Z, or onstage holding a mic announcing bingo numbers? We will let the music speak for itself and you can decide.”

Meninx has a pending patent on his own line of headphones. He first garnered airplay on public radio on the “BBC Essex Introducing” show.

Regarding this last, he writes, “It's a start, and it's good to see that half-a-rainforest's worth of paper used writing letters asking for spins wasn't completely wasted. Here's to the beginning of something special ... hopefully.”

“Breathe” by Meninx is available online worldwide. Get in early. Very early.
