The rapper, songwriter and producer of hip hop known as Ivan Pratt has released his latest single, “Tomahawk,” featuring GrizzlyHawk. The track has been proudly released on the Hands on Ent. independent record label entirely without support from the corporate music industry. Suave, classy and founded on solid, bass-driven back beats, “Tomahawk” by Ivan Pratt and featuring GrizzlyHawk is one of the most intriguing hip-hop tracks to appear in recent months.
Ivan Pratt cites as main artistic inspirations such popular staples of the hip-hop underground as Eminem, Andre 3000, Kid Cudi, and Kanye West. His own style, here merged with that of GrizzlyHawk, evinces the influence of Eminem in terms of clever wordplay. Pratt's affinity for the work of Andre 3000 (previously of OutKast) surfaces in his singing à la rhythm and blues over well-paired rap music. The quality of the songwriting on “Tomahawk” is undeniable, and the track's sharp production polishes Pratt's already-spotless performance alongside GrizzlyHawk to an even-higher shine.
Speaking of his start in music, Pratt writes, “All I did was listen to music when I was younger, and I always wanted to become a musician. So, one day I was lifting weights in my basement and an instrumental came on from Lil' Wayne, and I started writing and never looked back.”
Ivan Pratt and GrizzlyHawk hail from Baltimore, MD. Pratt has been writing music since the age of 16, but began performing in earnest in 2007 following an injury which caused him to reconsider his emphasis on playing football as a career.
“For awhile,” he writes in his official bio, “I had no plan and thought I would just have a regular day-to-day life just existing on earth with no main purpose, but then I found music. I started to write music but didn't know how to actually record it, so I studied other artist's melodies and flows until I found my own.
Pratt's artistic aim is greater than just to make a name for himself, too. Rather, he plans to put Baltimore on the music map for newly respectable reasons.
He writes of this, “[I want to] create musical art that can change the world and history, change the way people view music artists from Baltimore as all just being rappers about violence and drugs. I want to speak a message that people can understand – not just people in poverty or millionaires, but a message that can connect the world.”
