When it comes to (the) transbender, also known as Dave Mann, indie takes on a new feel that displays years of music and performance experience while keeping the sound fresh and full of vibrant emotions and melodies. In terms of vocals, bloggers most often describe Mann’s music as Win Butler, but others believe it is also akin to Interpol, The Talking Heads, Okkervil River, Pavement, Pixies and other more obscure references.

His most recent accomplishment is his track, “Tiny Spark,” being featured on WiFi PR Group’s digital mixtape, Indie Anthems Vol. 7, released at Pitchfork Music Festival and Lollapalooza.

As a solo project for Dave Mann, (the) transbender is his own venture in response to the more than 10 bands he has been in since he first picked up the bass guitar back in the mid-90s, when Weezer’s Blue Album became a fire and inspiration for his future music career. This endeavor is a way for Mann to express the thousands of songs and song ideas that he has created over the years—a multitude of songs in a discography that simply can’t be approached by any given band that he has performed with—which led him to start his own solo effort.

Mann had many favorite and go-to bands that he “will listen to until the day my ears fall off,” and these bands have at least in part influenced the music he himself as created: Radiohead, Pixies, Pavement, The Beatles, and The Beach Boys. He is also inspired by life in general, including his beloved wife and child, which he deems to be his most extraordinary experience.

His sound can be heard on his demo and self-published single, “Tiny Spark,” which features his friend Justin Higgins on French horn to lend a rich and organic vibe to the track. In addition, his producer and engineer Tommy Sherrod laid down some acoustic 12-string guitar and keyboard lines on the single as well.

Mann is also involved in benefit shows, hosted at venues that he has booked. They have involved various causes, from Autism Speaks to Guitars Not Guns, though he is eager to support any cause that “serves a purpose for the greater good.”

Most recently, Mann’s track “Tiny Spark” was featured on WiFi PR Group’s digital mixtape, Indie Anthems Vol. 7, a series of international independent artists who WiFi PR wants to put on the radars of industry tastemakers and music lovers the world over. The mixtape was released on 3,500 download cards handed out to attendees at Pitchfork Music Festival and Lollapalooza, both held in Chicago. These two festivals host lineups that include musicians covering any and all genres, including indie and vivacious solo projects, and (the) transbender fits right into the music discovered at these types of festivals. The mixtape is now available as 1,500 digital downloads that can be accessed from the Indie Anthems Bandcamp page.
