On Indie Anthems Vol. 9, singer-songwriters prevail as they share some of the more moving and emotional music on the album, all of which both seize and relax the engaged listener.

Singer-songwriters are a genre of artists that never really leave music lovers’ favorites lists, as they incite powerful emotions with music that is light on the ears but strong on the heart strings. Featured on Indie Anthems Vol. 9, three singer-songwriter groups, Kai Killion, Marty O’Reilly and Ursina, join other indie artists on this 16-track digital mixtape, the latest installment of the indie musician series from WiFi PR Group. The Indie Anthems mixtapes, released at major festivals and music events throughout the year, introduce these artists to both music fans and industry tastemakers who sense the defining roles in the future of the music world.

Held October 21-25 in 80+ venues throughout New York City, CMJ Music Marathon showcased more than 1,300 artists for over 125,000 attendees, who were exposed to some of the top talent in underground music. The festival is a prime source of music discovery and serves as the foundation of success for many new artists. CMJ was the perfect outlet to release Indie Anthems Vol. 9, and WiFi PR Group handed out 3,500 download cards to festival attendees to spread the word about the album’s featured indie artists.

Israeli surf rock purveyors Kai Killion were destined to share their music with the world after reuniting 10 years following their initial formation 13 years ago. Together, they’ve crafted a soft, melodic sound with the poppy instrumentation of the surf genre and vocals that range from slow and emotive to high-energy and upbeat. Their track “Drip” showcases this sound on Indie Anthems Vol. 9 and is a perfect introduction to their modernized breed of surf rock.

Another singer-songwriter group is an all strings trio named for vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Marty O’Reilly out of Santa Cruz, CA. Their track “Cold Canary Gaslight” drips with carefully spun, soulful melodies and harmonies courtesy of a guest female vocalist. The violin playing is an especially smart move for the band, as it lends a touch of old-school folk to their poignant, accessible track.

The most upbeat singer-songwriter track on Indie Anthems Vol. 9, “Fit In,” comes from Swiss folk pop artists, Ursina. Often compared to Feist, Sophie Hunger and Boy, Ursina employ light instrumentation with fluttering vocals in the verses, leading into a powerful soprano voiceover that carries the listener through the captivating chorus.
