Today marks the release of my second album, and my first instrumental album: Pictures of Pictures at an Exhibition.  If you're itching to listen, you're welcome to skip past the introduction, but there is a lot of information that might make this a more interesting listening experience.

History Lesson:
Russian Empire, 1870.  Mily Balakirev introduces composer Modest Mussorgsky to artist and architect Viktor Hartmann, and the two form a close bond.  In the year 1873, Hartmann dies.  An exhibition of his works is displayed in the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg in 1874.  Mussorgsky, inspired by the 400 plus works of his dear friend, composes the virtuosic piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition, which describes his impressions of eleven paintings as he walks through the gallery.  This piece would have been swallowed up by the vast other Romantic era compositions had it not been for the masterful orchestration by Maurice Ravel in 1922, and its introduction to audiences in 1929 by conductor Leopold Stokowski.  Or perhaps not.  I'm merely speculating.

Development:
I began my work on this project sometime last year, and completed the majority of the music this February.  I finished the music and began the artwork this April, finishing by the beginning of May.  I wanted to reimagine the entirety of the music, but I knew it would be an incomprehensive effort had I not developed my own interpretation of the art as well.  Thus, I have developed a version of the work that is familiar to those who know the original, but entertaining all on its own.  All ten pictures and five promenades are present in a new setting, displaying a wide range of styles.
