Facebook looking at moving into the music industry
- in Latest
This year has seen a huge amount of competition in the music streaming sector with a flurry of new services entering the market including Jay-Z's Tidal and Apple Music. Now social media giant Facebook looks as though it is looking at ways to give such companies a run for their money by showing an interest in moving into the music sector.
Specific details about in what capacity this may be in are currently unknown but the social network has reportedly been in talks with record companies including Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group.
Fans of the social network needn't worry too much about it following the same ill-fated path as Twitter's #Music as they apparently want to do something completely unique although what that entails exactly isn't entirely clear yet.
If Facebook is looking at going in a completely different direction with its music services then traditional methods of streaming could be entirely off the cards which will be a relief to many of the heavy hitters such as Spotify and Google Play Music.
One suggestion is that Zuckerberg and his band of tech nerds could be looking at using music videos as a way of getting into the music sector although at this point it is all just speculation.
What's certain is that Facebook's foray into the music world is long overdue. All of the major tech companies have some form of musical integration so it will be interesting to see what Facebook eventually comes up with and how it will change the musical landscape, if at all.
