Jooles latest album Shapeshifting goes live on iTunes, eMusic, Spotify and Amazon September 2nd 2015 with media downloads below.
Globe trotting most of his life, Sam Joole's latest album Shapeshifting weaves together the sounds of South Africa, calypso, bluesy rock n roll, a touch of the roaring 40’s and classy rock ballads. Many of the tracks tug at the heart-strings while others demand dancing shoes, and though individual song genres and tempo differ, the album rolls in and out of each track superbly.
Joole recorded his previous three works in London with Alien Zoo and Los Angeles and South America as Sam Joole respectively. Returning to home base Sydney Australia in 2013 this latest work was recorded there.
Title track Shapeshifting is a beautifully piano driven ballad of lost love and learning leads the set. Track two Money and Blow jumps into a tight upbeat bluesy rock n roll that swings the album into gear. Reality Show is a clever look at how live performers have their own reality TV Show in daily life that keeps rolling around from performance to performance and how audience can fuel the psych and create the 15 second super star over and again.
Soul Shine is a pretty song which entices the senses into palm fringed sun washed beaches with Trinidadian calypso rhythms and leads perfectly into Blue Eyed Girl which loses the calypso but holds the dreamy feel.
Breaking the dream, stand up bass swings into a roaring 40’s jazz based track aptly named Hollywood (Media Download).
Poverty Stricken Blues (Media Download) as the title suggests, holds a political message of sadness that envelopes the poor. It describes how all the money is spent on everything but on the people that need it most. The music itself goes against the grain of the message and misery and comes alive with upbeat zesty South African styles that make the body move and groove without thinking.
Rock ballad Love Will Set You Free smoothes the tempo back down adding to the album’s winding journey and is the perfect lead in for Fantasy a tricky little tune with essence of Ringo Starr in it’s cosmic weave.
The next track is the very powerfully driven Survivor (Media Download) a song written with descriptive lyrics portraying Joole’s grandmother surviving the holocaust. Musically the song cleverly takes the mind to that era painting a picture of that dark and troubled time.
‘The Secret’ brings this artist’s obvious Beatles influence back into the picture and the final track ‘You Can See Straight through Me’ is a beautiful number and leaves the listener with a clear mind and very relaxed.
