The singer and songwriter of contemporary folk music known as Greg Charles has released his latest single, “Repulsion Days.” The track is being concurrently dropped with two B-side tracks, “For All I Know” and “Drug Taken Girlfriend.” These and their flagship single, “Repulsion Days,” are being proudly published on the Octive Resin independent music label without the influence of the corporate music industry.
Sonorous, heartfelt, natural and indicative of the zeitgeist of today's folk-music revival, “Repulsion Days” from Greg Charles stands as proof that folk fans have much to look forward to in this indie folk musician from Australia.
Queensland-born Greg Charles cites as main artistic influences Picasso, Jay-Z, Dylan Young, Nabokov, Jodorowsky, Gareth Liddiard (The Drones), Built to Spill, Townes Van Zandt, Soulwax, and East River Pipe. From this eclectic potpourri of art forms and styles comes the inspiration for a highly textured sound that is all Greg Charles.
Music by Charles tends toward the introspective and emotionally evocative. His guitar work is subtly ingenious without sounding the least bit pretentious. His singing comes from his heart and takes the tone of a raw talent as it emerges from him with carefully crafted words.
Asked to describe the themes of his new single, Charles writes, “'Repulsion Days' is a meditation on the emotion called disgust, disgust being a response to everything that you are receiving through your senses in modern-day society. So it talks about psychologists, men, women, children, all of the roles that people play in society. The end result of experiencing all of these games people play is a general feeling of disgust and repulsion. Repulsion Days.”
“Repulsion Days” was written in a single night at a friend's house and recorded the following day at the Lounge Room with engineer Todd Dixon in 2009. And the B-side songs?
“'For All I Know' is a pop song,” writes Charles. “It’s full of melodies and is in drop-C tuning. It’s about learning how to tolerate somebody who is trying to ride your coattails.”
These single tracks are far from Greg Charles' first foray as a published musician. They are preceded by “Attack the Day” (independent – 2003), three records as Charles Curse: “InSilver Scene” (MusicYourMindWillLoveYou – 2005), “Rain In Skull” (MusicYourMindWillLoveYou – 2006) and “STOMAC” (WeHaveNoZen – 2011), as well as a vinyl re-release of “Rain In Skull” from Olde English Spelling Bee out of Brooklyn, NYC in 2009.
Greg Charles lives and makes music now in Burleigh Heads, Queensland, Australia, and has re-emerged with a brand-new perspective on creating and music. He is currently writing a new record, playing shows in Burleigh Heads and Brisbane, and plotting a new phase of creative output.
Asked for a comment for his fans, Charles says simply, “I'm ready.”
“Repulsion Days” from Greg Charles is available online worldwide beginning 23 November 2015.
