David Morris: Why don't you introduce yourself?

Paul Bailey/Rude Boy: My artist name is P. Bailey A.K.A. Paul Bailey/Rude Boy.

DM: How/When did you get started in the music business?

PB: My earliest memory is listening to the radio at the age of three, being in a trance and enthralled by the music that I was listening to. By the time I was a teenager/young adult, I was fully immersed into music which was mostly my record collection which had become my music teacher. As I entered into my first recording studio for my first set of demos In my twenties, I entered into my first recording studio creating demos. This is how I learned how the whole multi-tracking system works.

DM: Who were your mentors/influences?

PB: My main mentor I guess would be my father. He used to be in an all male choir. He loved music and loved to sing. My influences would be anyone, be it an athlete, activist, or entertainer who were doing great things.A few of them were the boxer Muhammed Ali, Motown legend Stevie Wonder, the greatest entertainer of all time Michael Jackson, The God-Father of Soul James Brown and icons like the Beatles, and the great activist Malcolm X. The list goes on and on.

DM: What are your professional credits?

PB: My latest project is my album that has been released in Asia and Brazil. It's actually ten countries in all that I made the album available. It's called "Paul Bailey's Special Edition" which has a total of 38 tracks. The single "Find Me Somebody (Sava Boric Mix) is the lead single off this album. The deal was negotiated by my publishing administrator through K-Digital Korea. The Academia Music Songwriting Contest awarded me Best Funk/Hip Hop for the song "Story" in September 2015. Artist of the Month from The Digest is a music publication company. I won another award called "Suggested Artist Placement Songwriting Award from songwriting contest in 2013. Also the song "Trophy"in 2010 won Best Provincial R&B/Soul CD off my album "Find Me Somebody". In 2011, I started my own licensing store for licensing my songs and other composers and writers for all media usage. So all you music supervisors, movie directors, brand sponsors, and ad agencies please get at me. PBC Music Publishing

DM: What is your process in recording songs?

PB: Good question. All songs are created in my head. If I don't hear it I don't feel it! I do not write or read music so there are no boundaries or rules that I don't break. First I conceive then I achieve! If I am collaborating with other writers we bounce ideas off of each other. If I have an idea for a melody or bass line, I will usually hum the parts out for the musicians I work with so they can get a vibe of what I want and lay it down. I am not an instrumentalist per say but I can usually figure out the chords on a piano or keyboard if needs be.

DM: Any special tools or programs used in your process?

PB: No special tools. A computer with a virtual program called Dub-Turbo 3 with virtual sounds, a good mic and a sound card is all that is needed these days in 21st century.

DM: Tell us more about your deal in Asia how that came about?

PB: I connected with my publishing administrator, Allen Johnston, through a professional networking site called Music 2 Deal. He was looking for catalogs to administrate world wide through his partnered company called Superb Songs that is registered in the U.K. He believed in my work and offered me a deal. In June of 2015 he went to Midem and brokered a deal with K-Digital from Korea to license musics digital content be it ring tones, ringback tones, or downloads. I included all formats of media usage. In addition, he brokered a deal in Brazil under the same agreement.

DM: So starting your own publishing licensing store was a good move for you?

PB: The best move ever made professionally. I always wanted to get into publishing since I started out as a songwriter.

DM: Are you a songwriter, a singer or both?

PB: That depends on who you ask. But for me, the closest one to my heart is singing. A friend of mine whom I went to school with called me "A walking radio." This was because I was always singing all the hits that they played on the radio. Next thing is songwriting and producing. In the beginning I started writing songs. I've been doing that since I was a child. Some of the songs I created were just silly songs for my friends and family. After that, I started making up lyrics to my favorite theme songs of my favorite television shows. Another thing I did was rewriting lyrics to a few of my favorite pop songs but it will be an x-rated version. (lol)

DM: Any plans on performing or touring anytime soon?

PB: I get that question a number of times. The short answer is, if there is a demand for it, then yes. I always love to do a show where I can showcase my talent. The event would have to be right. Preferably performing with a live band. Maybe a corporate or private event would be the best options for me.

DM: How has the music industry changed in your opinion?

PB: One thing I have noticed is there aren't any more advances pay outs given to artists by labels or publishers. The 360 deal as become the norm by major labels. This means they get a piece of any money that you make as an artist. An artist makes and reaps most of the benefit. Unless the artist has leverage, they will get squeezed in every direction. Independent is the name of the game now. If an artist can funnel their own funds going through crowd funding or otherwise it's much better for artists to own their masters and publishing. Another thing that has changed is sync deals licensing which is using your music for media usage. That has become lucrative if one can get brand sponsorship behind them or the like.

DM: Do you welcome this new direction?

PB: Yes! To some degree not having advances is a bit troubling. I am old school. Licencing is something I wanted to get into for years. It is very profitable for an artist. It seemed so natural that the industry was heading in that direction. Owning my masters and publishing is how I started out as an independent artist. No financial backing and with no help made me hustle and helped me focus and get a better understanding of which direction I needed to take to succeed.
.
DM: What are your New Year's resolutions?

PB: I don't do resolutions. I make a list of things tat I want to accomplish in my life. Kind of like a bucket list of things to do. As I complete my list list I also keep adding to the list of things I want to complete. I think the is much better than creating a stupid New Year's Resolution and all that stuff.

DM: On that note do you have any final words of wisdom or quotes for our readers?

PB: I read this great quote the other day but not sure who quoted it. It said "If you don't build your dreams someone will hire you to build theirs." With that said, I am out peace, love and Happy New Year!
