The Shockwaves NME awards saw rockers Muse walk away with the Best Band award for the second consecutive year while My Chemical Romance picked up awards for Best International Band and Best Video for their hit song “Na NA Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na).
The awards see readers of the iconic music publication casting their votes in the second stage of the voting process with more than three and a half music lovers giving their opinion for the 2011 awards.
Other winners at the ceremony held at the O2 Brixton in London last night included Hurts, who performed “Wonderful Life” complete with a troupe of gothic style dancers before winning in the Best New Band category.
Glastonbury won the award for best music festival, however before organiser Michael Eavis picked up his gong a video message from U2 guitarist the Egde confirmed that the Irish rock band will be playing at the festival this year after the band were forced to pull out last year following a back injury sustained by Bono.
The Edge said: “U2 will be playing on June 24 and we are so excited to get to play in front of the world's greatest festival audience.”
Finally, the award ceremony paid tribute to Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, naming him a “Godlike Genius”.
He told the audience that he had first come to the Brixton Academy 20 years ago to watch the Pixies: “I hoped one day I could be in a band that was big enough to f****** play the Brixton Academy!”
He dedicated his award to former Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide in 1994: “This one's for Kurt, thank you very much.”
