The Webby Awards celebrate excellence on the internet and were established in 1996 by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. Leading web experts and business figures judge entries in seven media categories including websites, advertising, social, games, film and video, media and public relations and apps.

This year there have been several musicians who have been announced as winners of this leading international award.

Rap superstar Jay-Z has won the Best Individual Performance in the film and video category for his promotional film “Smile.” This eight-minute movie tells the true story of his mother, Gloria Carter, who hid the fact that she was a lesbian while bringing up four children.

The British singer FKA twigs has received a Special Achievement prize, only given to those artists “whose work has improved upon the experience and capabilities of the internet in novel and impactful ways.” FKA twigs is credited with a unique understanding of the internet and has a stunning, interactive website that shows her belief in using the web as a creative platform.

Netflix has produced a documentary on Lady Gaga which has won the People’s Voice Award for Music and Best Editing. “Five Foot Two” documents the events around the making of Lady Gaga’s fifth studio album and her halftime performance at the American Superbowl final.

Katy Perry has been given the Webby People’s Voice Award for Music, in recognition of her marketing campaign for her hit single “Chained To The Rhythm.” The release of the single was preceded by a series of disco balls playing the song being left in cities around the world.

Other awards went to Pitchfork, Adult Swim Singles and song Exploder, all honoured in the Best Music Website category.
