The Ivor Novello Awards are judged by other musicians and are designed to “celebrate, honour and reward excellence” in British and Irish composing and songwriting. Categories for the awards include Best Song Musically and Lyrically, an Album award and Best Television Soundtrack.
The nominees for the Performing Right Society’s award for Most Performed Work have an unusual twist this year. Ed Sheeran is actually competing against himself, having been nominated for two of his songs: “Castle on the Hill” and “Shape of You.” His only competition comes in the form of Rag ‘n’ Bone Man with his hit single “Human.”
Stormzy has two nominations, one for Best Contemporary Song, and one for the Album award. His rivals for these honours include CamelPhat and Elderbrook, This Is The Kit and Everything Everything. Kate Stables is the artist behind This Is The Kit and is the only female singer to be recognised at this year’s awards.
The Best Original Film Score is contested by the composers Benjamin Wallfisch, Mica Levi and Dario Marianelli, who respectively wrote the music for “IT”, “Jackie” and “Paddington 2.”
Further awards will be handed out for Outstanding Song Collection, Songwriter of the Year and International Achievement.
The Chair of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, commented “As the only peer-nominated music award ceremony in the country, the Ivors are inherently about musical merit and communication more than promotion, and we’re especially excited to be able to honour some of the phenomenal talents of the contemporary British music writing scene.”
The awards ceremony takes place on 31 May at Grosvenor House in London and will be hosted by Paul Gambaccini. Previous winners have included Pulp, Bryan Adams, Boy George, Jeff Beck and Marc Almond.
