What Is It With Bands And Booze?

It goes without saying that rock and heavy metal bands enjoy a little tipple whether on tour or in the studio, but there is now a fascination with creating their own beer.
Motorhead are the latest to jump on the bandwagon, with their “Road Crew” beer being released in the United States, following a successful launch in the U.K. Originally available since December 2015, its popularity has risen to such an extent that it’s now sold in mainstream supermarkets.
Described as an American IPA with a 6.2%, it will be brewed in the U.S. by the Arcadia Brewing Company, based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The advertising blurb suggests that: “Road Crew is perfect for all rock, beer and hop heads and goes down especially well while listening to Motorhead at a wonderfully obscene, lawn-killing volume.”
Rock supergroup Sinsaenum, whose line-up includes ex-members of Slipknot, Dragonforce and Loudblast, have chosen to create a red wine named “A Taste Of Sin.” Guitarist Frederic Leclercq explains how things started: “I actually discovered this wine producer last year at the Metal Hammer Awards in Berlin. I got really surprised by its quality, and when I found out it was called 666 Metal Wines, I was sold!”
Predictably, Metallica are looking to produce their own “Whiskey in the Jar”, in collaboration with Dave Pickerell, a former master distiller for Maker’s Mark Bourbon. He is currently looking for suitable locations and comments: “I can just say that we’re going to make a killer whiskey product, and probably build a little distillery somewhere as well.”
Other bands enjoying success with their alcohol endeavours include Deftones, who have three beers produced by San Diego brewer Belching Beaver, and of course, Iron Maiden who are following up their “Trooper” beer with a golden ale called “Light Brigade”.
