Notable Music Events April 30th Include: Elvis, Beatles & Rolling Stones

Incredibly, it is 61 years ago today since Elvis Presley recorded “Jailhouse Rock”, written by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller. The track was featured in the movie of the same name, but Elvis actually mimed the lyrics. At the time, the film received mixed reviews and was considered scandalous for presenting a criminal as a hero and showing him in bed with his co-star.

Warner Brothers are today recognised as being one of America’s top movie studios, with their record label launched in 1958, initially releasing a string of commercial failures. Their history changed with the signing of famous rock and roll acts, including the Everly Brothers. Their first release “Cathy’s Clown went to number one on April 30 1960, spending seven weeks at the top and is widely credited with turning around the fortunes of the company.

1964 saw the height of Beatles mania, and on this day, they played two shows at the Odeon Cinema in Glasgow, followed by an interview with BBC Scotland, broadcast on the evening news.

Receiving critical acclaim, the Rolling stones fourth album “Aftermath”, went to number one on the UK chart of April 30 1966. It is renowned for being the first of their records to only include Jaggers and Richards penned compositions.

Notable births on April 30 include American rockabilly and country music singer, Johnny Horton and drummer and record producer Bobby Gregg, known for his work on Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone”. Also born on this day was teen idol of the 1960’s Bobby Vee who had thirty eight chart hits including “Take Good Care Of My Baby.”

 

American blues legend Muddy waters died on April 30 1983, named as an influence to many acts including Eric Clapton, Cream and Led Zeppelin.
