The eagerly awaited biographical drama “Bohemian Rhapsody” focuses on the 15 years of Freddie Mercury’s life from the formation of Queen until their performance at Live Aid. The film’s music producers are Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, and the movie is set to feature some of the band’s iconic rock songs.

Rami Malek plays Freddie Mercury and has had to spend a significant amount of time in the recording studio learning to replicate Freddie’s great four-octave vocal range. To recreate Mercury’s sound, the film will include elements of Malek’s voice, recordings of the band and the use of a sound-alike performer.

Queen enthusiasts will have to wait until November to see “Bohemian Rhapsody”, but there are plenty of other music-related movies on offer this year.

Abba fans, already excited by the release of new music, can catch up with some old classics with the sequel  “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again”, due to hit cinemas in July. The movie features the original cast with a guest appearance from Cher who sings the iconic hit “Fernando”.

A remake of “A Star Is Born” has hit numerous problems with several superstar names suggested for the leading roles, but now with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga on board, it has a release date of September 2018. The story focuses on the decline of a country music star who discovers an unknown talent, with Lady Gaga composing and performing original songs in the film.

Other classic musical movies getting a makeover include Oliver Twist, Mary Poppins and Sister Act, all to be released later this year. 2019 sees the launch of two biographical films telling the respective stories of Elton John and Motley Crue.
