Have you heard the news? In case you didn’t, the highly acclaimed Swedish pop duo I Am Karate have released their latest video to go alongside their catchy new single, News.
The video, which premiered on the entertainment news site CelebMix, does everything right. It’s simple but effective, with the crafty use of some chalk drawings on the streets of Stockholm. With vibrant lyrics being scrawled all over pavements, pillars and buildings, the video perfectly captures the colourful and quirky nature of I Am Karate, while giving listeners a true karaoke-like experience as the lyrics flash in front of their eyes.
News, the latest single from duo Erika Soldh Ahlström and Marta Petterson’s own label, I Am Karate Music, once again proves why these two ladies are the ones to be reckoned with. Having already grabbed the attention and praises of The Times and The Guardian with their previous singles, and walking away with the coveted Best Unsigned Award at the Danish Gaffa Awards, they’re fast making their way onto the mainstream music scene. Speaking about their latest release, the pop group says News tells a very modern story encompassing social media, fame and the constant need to be seen.
This song is about a character who will do whatever it takes to shine in the spotlight on/at whatever (Instagram, work, etc.). She just wants people’s attention and it turns into a twisted self-destructive chase for her. We wanted to poke on that state of mind of our generation that has gotten so normalised by the emergence of social media and question what the hell we’re doing.
Fortunately, I Am Karate know exactly what they’re doing, with song after song gaining attention across the globe. They know exactly what it takes to create a catchy song that will have listeners up and dancing in no time, while also commenting on various social issues their target audience can relate to.
What sets I Am Karate apart from the rest is their effortless ability to merge together both the old and the new, with their songs featuring nuances of old-school R&B while throwing in a solid bit of dubstep to keep you awake. It’s far from the usual poppy, bubblegum-infused pop songs doing the rounds. Their music has something extra to it and, at times, a slight sense of melancholy which reminds you that being young and free in a modern world isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
