After a successful initial tour in Australia and New Zealand in 2017, followed by their current US Tour, 'The Music Of Cream' will bring their show celebrating the 50th anniversary of the hallowed 60's trio to the UK. The three piece group features relatives of the original members paying homage to their legendary forbears with an authenticity and reverence that only family can muster.
The band feature drummer Ginger Baker's song Kofi Baker, late bass player/vocalist Jack Bruce's son Malcolm Bruce, and guitarist Eric Clapton's nephew (by marriage) Will Johns. The show received great acclaim in Australia and New Zealand and will kick off a three date UK tour with a show at St Luke's in Glasgow this Friday. The concerts take place 50 years on from Cream's original farewell show at the Royal Albert Hall in November 1968.
Fans can expect to hear classic tracks like Sunshine Of Your Love, White Room, Badge, Crossroads and Spoonful as well as hearing personal stories from two sons about their famous fathers, and Will Johns on his uncle and mentor Eric Clapton. The gigs will also see the musicians interplay with footage of the original band on the big screen, and include never-before-seen film and photos in a multimedia experience that has been created especially for the 50th Anniversary Tour.
“We had such an amazing response to our first tour in Australia and New Zealand that we’ve spent some considerable time adding to the show” says Malcolm Bruce. “Now, we not only have this amazing legacy of music to play, but an opportunity to share some wonderful insights and stories with our audience…a backstage pass like no other, if you will.”
Kofi Baker adds, “We also have a few surprises in store that we know people are going to really respond to. We can’t wait to be on the road again playing these shows in the UK in November.”
Of the band's initial run of shows last year, The Rock Pit said “Eric and Ginger and Jack (if looking down on us) would be proud. This is an exceptional night of wonderful music” with The Music adding, “The Music of Cream were not trying to emulate their free-spirited forefathers... this was purely about celebrating the legendary music.”
Ambient Light, meanwhile, said:
The trio took turns supporting one-another with bluesy riffs and bursting out in energetic solos. Be it through Baker’s pounding bursts during Sitting on the Top of the World, Bruce’s jazzy climbs throughout Politician, or the shreds and wails of Johns in Deserted Cities, the group had the audience eating out of the palm of their hands.”
During their short lifespan at the tail end of the 60's Cream were responsible for some of the most exotic and intoxicating musical adventures ever recorded. They took a template of rock, blues and jazz and added in psychedelic textures, long instrumental diversions and songs which have easily stood the test of time. They're also credited with helping invent the power trio format as well as being one of the first supergroups. After their break up in 1968 they reunited only twice, for a short run of shows at the Royal Albert Hall in 2005, and a few more at Madison Square Gardens. With the sad passing of Jack Bruce in 2014 the legacy is now carried on by his son and his bandmates who provide an opportunity for people to hear this music again the way it was meant to be played.
