The biggest names on the internet are to be acknowledged at the first ever MTV O Awards to take place on April 28, with Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber being just two of the acts up for an award on the evening.

Because the awards are based on the popularity of acts on the internet the awards ceremony will take place across the websites of MTV.com and VH1.com along with social media sites including Facebook and Twitter.

Voting for the winners of the awards has begun today with members of the public being able to shine a spotlight on the acts that have gone viral this year.

Some of the categories being featured in the awards include the award for The Best Fan Cover which will b a chance for cover artists including the Beliebers, Katy Perry's Bandaids and Gaga's Little Monsters to be able to fight out for the best cover act.

Shannon Connolly, the vice president of music strategy for the MTV Music group said: “Music consumption has never been greater, and it's hugely important to our audience.”
She added: “We felt like the time was right to look at the convergence of technology and music fans and the YouTube celebrities who have created this new ecosystem where music is exploding.”

Pop princess Lady Gag is up for the award for Most Innovative Artist while Tyler the Creator is currently in the lead for the award for Most Followed on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Justin Bieber, Michael Jackson and Britney Spears will see their fans fighting for supremacy in the Best Fan Forum category in this groundbreaking new awards format that is sure to highlight the importance of the internet in creating musical superstars.
