Categories cut in Grammy Awards overhaul
- in Latest
A huge revamping of the Grammy Awards will see 31 award categories cut from the awards as organisers work to reduce the enormous structure of the music industry awards and celebrations.
The number of categories that will be recognised at the next award ceremony will now be 78, cut from the 109 that has been the standard for some time.
Many of the already existing categories will be merged while others will be dropped however the top awards will remain.
The Grammy Awards for best album, record, song of the year and best new artist will continue to feature in the show and although hug changes are underway most viewers will not notice the differences as the televised show only usually shows around 10 awards with the others broadcast on the internet.
Neil Portnow, the president of the Recording Academy has said that some of the changes have involved “some pretty passionate discomfort” with some musicians being left feeling little unsettled.
However he continued to add that the changes were essential to be able to maintain “the prestige of the highest and only peer-recognised award in music”.
The R&B genre seems to have been the hardest hit in the restructuring with the number of awards in the category cut by 50% from right to now only four.
Some of the changes here have included the merging of the awards for best male, female and group R&B vocal performance into a single R&B performance award but there have been cuts across the board with the individual awards for male and female vocal performance now also be combined into a new best pop solo performance category.
The new format 54th edition of the Grammy awards will be taking place as usual in February net year at a date yet to be announced.
