London’s Eddie Brett, formerly of the British indie-pop band and Britain’s Got Talent Finalists Loveable Rogues, has returned with his fresh new solo project mate.
Taking a step away from the label-run, celebrity boyband model, mate is symbolic to Eddie’s true face. The distinct mix of spoken word over beats is tasked specifically on showcasing his crafty lyrical skills, observing the sociopolitical climate of our times.
Introducing listeners to this exciting new sound, mate has released the debut single ‘myself', produced by Swindon’s very own acid house DJ Chaney, and has now shared the accompanying video starring The Office’s Big Keith.
The ‘myself’ video tells the story of someone struggling with alcoholism and coming to terms with the need for change. The song’s hard-hitting subject matter becomes a welcoming invitation to awaken the listeners’ imagination.

Having been in the eye of the media and tasting success in his previous endeavors, Eddie came to realize this was not the path he wanted to go down. It was missing the raw, real and personal touch that he loves about his art and as a talented songwriter and poet, Eddie took solace living on a small canal boat on the Thames where he started cooking up a wave of new ideas inspired by his reflections and observations of life.
The pseudonym mate derives from his Grandad’s champion pigeon and was chosen by Eddie in a desperate attempt for him to stop getting told off by his Nan for certain lyrics being associated with his name.
Now back on dry land and working with various producers and artists, mate is Waltham Forest’s very own social commentator. With stories to tell and that added Mike Skinner (The Streets) geezer-ish charm, Eddie Brett, a.k.a mate, is one of the most exciting new lyricist in town.
