A shake up in the format of the Grammy Awards has seen a number of categories being cut while others have been consolidated however, not everyone has been a loser in the new Grammy Awards with the video game industry now being able to be honored at the event.

Industry insiders have long called for the Grammy Awards to acknowledge the music and soundtracks on video games .

Now the new Grammy format will see music from video games eligible for awards in four different categories, although their is still no dedicated category specifically for this genre.

The categories that now include the possibility for an award winner from the video games industry are; Best Song Written for Visual Media, Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media and the award for The Music for Visual Media.

The reason behind not creating a specific category or the video gaming industry was explained by the Vice President of Awards for the Recording Academy, Bill Freimuth.

He said: “I think this could be viewed as a first step in the direction of video games getting their own category. Many people from the game community have been asking us to create a special category for games over the years, but the main reason we haven't is because we have received very few entries from game publishers.”

Nominees for the 2012 Grammy Awards are yet to be announced and although video game music can now be celebrated fans will have to wait to see if any enter into the new awards.
