Bonj Mpanza got her lucky break, when she was asked to open for #thesouthafrican leg for the fabulous Sam Smith; World tour #ThrillOfitAll in Johannesburg and Cape Town South Africa in April 2019, currently performing right now.

Bonj Mpanza was born in Soweto Johannesburg where her love of music was initiated by growing up around her musical family and finding herself in an environment where music was played everywhere, loudly and beautifully. Sowetan musicians are known for their talent. Soweto is place where famous people have lived and music was written to commemorate them, people like Nelson Mandela lived in Soweto and his house that he shared with Winnie Mandela in Vilakazi Street, is now a museum, but I digress.

Bonj went to the National School of Arts where she developed her phenomenal music skills. When she finished her tenure there, she decided to move to Cape Town to study Jazz at the University of Cape Town.

She pursued her singing career seriously and managed to collaborate with some great South African local artists; the likes of Mafikizolo, Zonke, Lady Zamar and others. She was also discovered by the well- known Musician ‘Tresor’ who was really taken in by her music talent and her voice which in turn got her signed up with Universal music.

She has recently written a song called ‘Ndaweni” that is featured on the highly acclaimed sophomore singer ‘Anati “jazz ablum lyezi. She has written and performed some of her own music although she hasn’t got a hit single under her belt- yet! This will hopefully all change now and in fact makes this feat of her opening for Sam Smith even more surreal and a brilliant launching pad to her promising career.

Bonj describes her music style as part Electronic, Groove and Smooth sounds. Her voice is husky and sultry, yet powerful. She is a quiet and reserved person in her daily life, but a force to be reckoned with on stage, not surprising that she was chosen by Sam Smith to open for his #ThrillOfItAll world tour. Go Bonj your time is now.
