The Pillow Queens who hail from Dublin are singers with a definite social conscience. This week saw the ladies embark on a major tour which started in Liverpool and will span into Europe. Dates run from May into June, with a festival appearance in August supporting Soak.

This group have fun while they work and they’re an intelligent bunch of women with songs alluding to social issues; namely one of the songs they released was ‘Gay Girls’ - an ode to the generation of young women in Ireland who have been oppressed and gagged to express their sexuality. However, now there seems to be some respite for the gay women of Ireland.

The Pillow Queens have grown in the last couple of years and they attest this by stating ‘“I think we have more confidence. When we first started playing gigs, we were a little bit unsure with the language talking to certain engineers and having the voice to say, ‘It should be sounding a little bit different.’ Or, as Lyons so beautifully puts it, “We’re definitely more cock-sure.” With this confidence at peak level, they have suggested doing tours in Europe and in the USA.

2019 is going to be a cracker year for these Queens as they have an album as a work in progress and they are loving the process of it all. They insist that’ “We don’t want to be too precious, but we don’t want to throw away songs that we need to put a lot of love into,” Connolly explains, adding later, “and if that [album] has to come out in 2020, then so be it. But if it’s 2019 that would be fantastic, and I think we have it in us to do it. But again, I don’t want to rush the love.”

Pam Connolly, Sarah Corcoran, Cathy McGuinness and Rachel Lyons formed the band in 2016 and sold out their first-ever show. It looks like they are set to make moves in 2019 with their pop punk genre of music and the demand for their music shows itself with all the tour dates coming up. They have also recently been nominated for IRELAND’s RTE Choice Music Prize for the Song of the year, with their single “Gay Girls”
