‘Rainier Fog' is the title track of Alice in Chains’ most recent release, which hit No. 1 across Billboard’s Rock, Alternative and Hard Music Charts and No. 1 on the iTunes Rock Album Chart and earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album. It’s a quirky song featuring people wearing giant beer bottles, a humorous side of their music coming through and the lyrics also referencing alcohol too - "Live in the past, you find out it's hard to stay sober."
With a barrage of deep meaning lyrics, the second verse says: "My see-through heart like urethane. Beats for you proud, up down and through all the love and pain." A user on Genius lyrics website (Ron G) pointed out; "Urethane is similar to epoxy resin and is applied to many surfaces (like wood furniture) to protect it from damage and preserve its natural aesthetics." Other lyric references are possibly to Layne Staley, who passed away from an overdose.
As regards the video, some fans have been quoted as saying: ‘’Can anyone explain what I have just watched here"?
The sound is not dissimilar to the 90's Grunge bands, from the likes of Nirvana, Foo Fighters etc and apparently the song is about the Seattle grunge scene, back in the early 90's.
Over the course of their remarkable career, Alice In Chains (vocalist/guitarist Jerry Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney, bassist Mike Inez and vocalist/guitarist William DuVall) have garnered multiple Grammy nominations, sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, and amassed a diehard international fan base whose members number in the millions. However, there was a period of inactivity due to the substance abuse of their one band member Staley who ultimately died from his abuse. They reunited and returned a few years later with the hit single, Black Gives way to Blue which earned them a Grammy nomination. They feel they have made up for lost time and on May 20th 2019, Alice In Chains will embark on an international headline tour that will take them to Dublin, Belfast, Glasgow, Birmingham, London, the Netherlands, Paris, Brussels, Luxembourg, Zurich, Prague, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Finland, Russia and Greece, before an extensive run of co-headline dates in the US with Korn.
