Soul, surrealist duendita is starting to catch the attention of a wider audience with her spiritual and ambient sounds, which are delivered in what feels a unique way. Having performed at UK’s The Great Escape festival last month and receiving great feedback - duendita continues with a string of concerts across the USA with an upcoming July appearance at Sacred Ground Festival in Germany.
Her debut EP direct ‘line to My Creator’ has been two years in the making. She fits this 10 track spiritual whirlwind tour of personal emotions into an epic 30 minutes experience. The saying ‘it’s the quality not the quantity’ definitely relates here. Whilst listening to the EP you feel in no rush, smooth vocals (which at times sound a little like Sade) flow effortlessly, backed up by rich harmonies to set a chilled mood. duendita’s great vocals are often left exposed with little instrumental accompaniment, while thick bass lines intermittently kick in throughout creating a great vibe. Her jazz sounding style crosses various genres throughout the EP.
duendita is from Brooklyn, New York with an Afro-Latino mix. Her background paves the way for an interesting and creative output of artistry which she is becoming known for. She sings about injustice, especially in her community where there is little opportunity for the people in the hood, as well as the senseless killing of the 23 year old mother Korryn Gaines by the police. She dedicated her single ‘blue hands’ to Korryn. duendita’s music is heartfelt, honest and pure.
Venturing of her music, she is particular of the foods she eats. Being a Vegan, she has said to love Plantain salad with blueberries, grilled cheese and soup. Making the most of good food is important to her, as it wasn’t always a readily available commodity. She also goes to Church occasionally, draws with coloured pencils and smokes weed. At times she can be quite melancholic, she was quoted as saying: ‘“I’m very loving and full of joy, but I’m also depressed all the time,” she explains. “Maybe everything that has happened in the world has just created this divided person. I often think, Colonization has divided me this way. I cannot recognize myself. I do not fit in America.”
