Lillie Mae Spins Her Musical Wurlitzer With 'Other Girls'

Lillie Mae Rische has been turning heads with her musical ability since she walked into the Nashville recording studio of legendary singer, songwriter, and producer ‘Cowboy’ Jack Clement as a nine-year-old.
Clement hailed Mae as a voice destined for great things on that occasion way back in 2000, but it is her association with another great of American music that has propelled her to the spotlight in more recent times.
Mae grew up on the road. The daughter of a travelling musician named Forrest Carter Rische, she and her brothers and sisters learned to play a variety of instruments and to sing at a young age, and together they spent years touring the country in their motor home and performing in the Forrest Carter Family Band.
After playing in rebranded all-sibling outfit Risches (later renamed Jypsi who had a Top 40 hit on Hot Country Songs with I Don’t Love You Like That), Mae struck out on her own path in 2012, joining Jack White’s all-female live and studio band The Peacocks as fiddle and mandolin player. A friendship with White quickly developed, and The White Stripes star signed Mae to his Third Man label, releasing her first single Nobody’s and full length debut album Forever And Then Some to rave reviews.
White has stepped aside and handed production of Other Girls to Dave Cobb, and he’s overseen a slick record that serves as the perfect showcase for Mae’s vast musical talent. Full on country songs I Came For The Band (For Country) and Whole Blue Heart sit comfortably alongside rockier numbers such as opener You’ve Got Other Girls For That and Terlingua Girl, the latter a slow burner that erupts into a psychedelic flurry of guitars and drums.
At times mournful, at others triumphant, Mae’s vocals are rich, sweet and soulful, and carry her introspective lyrics gloriously over a Wurlitzer of musical showmanship that Mae has carefully honed over the years.
