Winners of the 2011 Eurovision song contest have returned back to their home country of Azerbaijan where they have received praise from the president regarding their victory in Europe.

President Ilham Aliyev met with the singing duo of Eldar Gasimov and Nigar Jamal as they returned with the trophy fresh from the competition at the weekend in Germany.

“We gained a historic victory in Eurovision, a victory of youth, the Azeri people and the state.”

The faces behind the historic win are 21 year old student Eldar Gasimov from the capital of Azerbijan, Baku who joined forces with Nigar Jamal, a 30 year old mother of two children who is living in London, together they created the victorious group Ell-Kikki.

During the competition, which was watched by an audience of more than 100 million across Europe, the duo sang a classic Eurovision pop song about a love struck couple entitled Running Scared.

Following the news of the victory people in the capital of Baku drove around the city with national flags and sang and danced in the streets according to reports.

While they may be celebrating in Baku a thanks must go to Sweden as the song was composed by Stefan Ornm Sandra Bjurman and Iain Farquharson from Sweden while the couple were accompanied by four Swedish dancers for the winning performance.
