US pop sensation Lady Gaga paid tribute to the Royal Wedding during her performance at the Radio 1 Big Weekend in Carlisle.

The eccentric singer dedicated a cover of a classic jazz song originally made by Nat King Cole, adding her own new words to the Orange Coloured Sky track.

Lady Gaga told the crowd in Carlisle that the song was for “Kate and Will” and added: “I was wishing I was at the royal wedding.”

The singer kept fans at the free festival waiting for 15 minutes before she finally appeared on stage wearing her very own fake pregnancy stomach before launching into the hour long set in which she combined old favourites from her debut album The Fame, new songs from her upcoming album Born This Way and a couple of jazz trumpet solo performances.

Before going on stage Lady Gaga told Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills: “I'm going to change it up a bit and maybe do a jazz tune. I'm going to see how I feel.”
She added: “It's not the Monster Ball. I usually get a little more off the cuff when I do festival shows. I get really inspired by the audience depending on how I feel about the show. It's not completely planned out.”

The final set saw Lady Gaga beginning with a rendition of Born This Way, followed by Bad Romance and then Telephone. She spent most of the concert seated at the piano and also included a version of The Edge of Glory which she wrote about her grandfather and brought the star almost to tears.

Other acts taking part in the weekend long festival which changes location each year and is free to attend included a headlining performance from the Foo Fighters on the Saturday night.

The Radio 1 Big Weekend is the largest free festival in Europe and attracted 40,000 fans to the airfield in Carlisle for the musical extravaganza.
