In his new single ‘Close’, singer-songwriter Mike Ruby contemplates a relationship that simply wasn’t meant to be, and in doing so, draws in multitudes of listeners into the dynamics of his emotional journey. This Canadian artist opted to work with some of the most innovative producers in the industry, such as the likes of Chris Hartz, Nicky Paul and his countrymen Ryan Stewart and Joel Stouffer, and their collaboration has resulted in an emotionally charged track that employs Ruby’s vocal abilities perfectly.

Mike Ruby has spoken out about the meaning embedded into the tune, and why it feels like a milestone in his personal exploration. He reports that the song is based on a real-life relationship that got away due to poor timing but a bond that lifts him up with wonderful memories nonetheless. “It’s one of those things you’re so thankful for, that you have those memories, but you’re also thankful that it didn’t go the way it could have. The song is kind of about questioning your decisions, and looking back and seeing that it was actually for the better. It also opens up that big bag of worms, of how many people are out there, that you could have that experience with.” Ruby’s honesty is endearing, especially how it is conveyed through the song.

The verses drift out delicately with minimal background effect or instrumentation, letting Ruby’s fluid, powerful voice stand on its own, while the chorus strikes with some masterful production deliveries. It’s a song the listeners might think they have heard before but the clever little electronic vocal mashes in the background as well as Ruby’s silky, emotive inflexion.

What is notable is that Mike Ruby began his career as a saxophone player, so he is well aware of incorporating a variety of instruments into his music, yet the process of songwriting and vocal delivery is something he had had to learn on his own. So what emerges through this charming, relatable single is that Ruby’s words are not something trained into his repertoire; those lyrics flow out of a real, genuine space of love, understanding and respect.
